Florida has over 40 wine producing wineries and many more wineries that sell wine produced outside of Florida. The map below however is limited to the 21 Certified Florida Farm Wineries that we have in the state that meet the state’s guidelines for producing wine from Florida grapes, fruits, and other agricultural products.
What is a Certified Florida Farm Winery?
So, what exactly does it mean for a winery to be a “Certified Florida Farm Winery”? This isn’t just a fancy label. It’s a specific designation awarded by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) to wineries that meet a particular set of standards. The program aims to promote and support wineries that are deeply connected to Florida’s agricultural landscape.
According to the information provided by FDACS and the Florida Statutes, to qualify for this certification, a winery must:
- Prioritize Local Produce: A significant portion of their wine (at least 60% of the wine produced) must be made from state agricultural products grown right here in Florida. This means when you sip their wine, you’re often tasting the essence of local fruits, berries, or grapes.
—- - Be an Active Farm: They need to maintain an operating vineyard or farm with a minimum of 5 acres of Florida land that produces commodities used in their winemaking.
—- - Production Limits: They must produce and sell less than 250,000 gallons of wine annually.
—- - Welcome the Public: These wineries are required to be open to the public for tours, tastings, and sales for at least 30 hours each week. This makes them fantastic destinations for both locals and tourists looking for an authentic Florida experience.
—- - Annual Certification: It’s not a one-time deal. Wineries must apply annually to FDACS for certification, ensuring they consistently meet these standards.
The program also allows these certified wineries to be officially recognized as state tourist attractions, highlighting their role in Florida’s diverse tourism offerings.
